Cantates de Noël - Bach

Christmas cantatas

J. S. Bach

J. S. Bach

Bwv 36 « Schwingt freudig euch empor »

The Cantatas selected for this programme were all carefully chosen, and all require four soloist singers as well as an instrumental chamber music ensemble, each part of which is carried by a single solo instrumentalist so the result corresponds as best as possible to performances at the time of J.S. Bach. These cantatas were mainly written for the Advent season, and do not necessarily require the presence of a large choir or elaborate orchestra – simply an ensemble of soloists made up of four singers and nine instrumentalists. The result is a chamber music-like vision of J.S. Bach’s magnificent cantatas, and is a feature the Banquet Céleste wishes to defends at all costs.

Bach’s Cantatas were beautifully smooth and radiant when performed by Le Banquet Céleste.  […] Tonight, the ensemble’s music touched the souls of an enchanted audience, who applauded warmly and couldn’t quite get enough of these stunning musicians who had amazed them so thoroughly.” Suzanne Dauman

“The Banquet Céleste enchanted us all at Christmas. The Banquet Céleste ensemble performed a brilliant interpretation of Bach’s cantatas at the Opera in Rennes, originally composed specially for the Advent period.” Thierry Martin
